Design Director 2019-2021

HackDavis is the first major collegiate hackathon at UC Davis where over 700 students, hackers, and creators come together for 24 hours of hacking. 👩‍💻

As the Design Director, I guided the design team in the visual interface and user experience design in collaboration with the technical team to develop the HackDavis website. I lead the conceptualization of our brand identity and designed the logos and illustrations. 

Context

Overview

HackDavis is a student-run event that challenges its participants to hack for social good and create an opportunity for us to explore the intersection between technology and society. Directors prepare all year for the event through teams including design, operations, technical, marketing, sponsorship, external relations, and finance.

We wanted people to build projects with a meaningful impact and hope to foster a community dedicated to social change. Most hackathons often don't result in projects as practical solutions to specific societal problems and we looked to change that. 

My Role

As Design Director, I collaborate with directors from every team to provide design materials. I work very closely with the Technical Director to develop the website, ensure feasibility, and deliver assets, alongside the UI/UX designer, with who I work to create user flows, wireframes, and UI components. The design team also consists of a Brand Designer, with who I work to develop marketing assets and hackathon materials. I lead the creative vision and with input from my team, designed all the illustrations, logos, and color palette to use throughout our design system.

Timeline

We recruit new team members in the Spring quarter and begin event preparation and design development over the summer break. In the Fall quarter, we deliver and push out our website designs and begin designing all hackathon materials such as banners, t-shirts, stickers, and opening/closing ceremony slides. In the Winter quarter before the event, we design all the social media and marketing materials.
